Michael J. Del Piano
Michael J. Del Piano is an Associate Senior Counsel in the New York State United Teachers Office of General Counsel in New York City. Prior to joining NYSUT, Mr. Del Piano was an attorney with Caplan & Caplan, P.C., focusing his practice on civil litigation, personal injury, employment discrimination, and commercial and residential real estate transactions. Mr. Del Piano joined NYSUT as an attorney in 2013, having previously served the organization as a law clerk while a student at Albany Law School.
Mr. Del Piano’s practice is focused on affirmative and defensive litigation and appeals for NYSUT, its affiliates and their members in the federal and state court systems. He has extensive experience before the National Labor Relations Board, Public Employment Relations Board, and arbitration. Mr. Del Piano also advises clients on non-litigation legal matters regarding collective bargaining and compliance with federal and state law.
Mr. Del Piano is a member of the New York City Bar Association’s Labor & Employment Committee, New York State Bar Association’s Labor & Employment Law Section, American Bar Association’s Labor & Employment Committee, Labor and Employment Relations Association – New York City and Long Island Chapters, AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee, Association for Legal Excellence, and New York Democratic Lawyers Council. In addition to frequently conducting NYSUT trainings and presentations for members and local leaders, Mr. Del Piano is a contributing editor to the New York State Bar Association’s Lefkowitz on Public Sector Labor Law treatise. The ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service recognized Mr. Del Piano as a 2018 and 2019 Pro Bono Leader for extraordinary pro bono services through ABA Free Legal Answers virtual legal clinic.
