John R. Runyan practiced union-side labor and employment law with the Detroit law firm, Sachs Waldman, from 1979 until 2019. He is currently Of Counsel to the law firm, Nickelhoff & Widick, PLLC. Following graduation from law school, Runyan clerked for United States District Judge Stephen J. Roth. He also taught at his alma mater, Wayne State University Law School, full-time from 1974 until 1977 and then as a member of the part-time adjunct faculty from 1978 until 2010.
John currently serves as President of the Board of Governors of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He also serves on the Council of the State Bar Labor and Employment Law Section, which awarded him its Distinguished Service Award in January, 2016. He is also a recipient of the Julian Abele Cook, Jr. and Bernard A. Friedman FBA Civility Award. Runyan is a past President of the Detroit [now Eastern District] Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and the Detroit Bar Association.
